Two NMU students and two alumni successfully completed their quest to circumnavigate Lake Superior by kayak to raise awareness of the importance of clean water and funding for nonprofits that protect the Great Lakes. They departed in May and paddled the final leg of their 1,500-mile journey into Presque Isle beach Aug. 30.
The group is composed of senior digital cinema major Ryan Busch, senior environmental science major Jared Vanoordt, environmental studies and sustainability alumnus Drew Etling and wildlife and fisheries management alumnus Karol Rajski. All had previous guiding experience at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
They collected water samples that can be tested for microplastics by the Superior Watershed Partnership. They also will make a documentary about their journey and hope to screen it at film festivals in the Great Lakes region.
The Northern Climate Network will host a Marquette Climate March from 3-5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Marquette Commons. Marquette is among thousands of cities creating awareness for environmental change and participating in the People's Climate Movement this year.
Community members are invited to take part in the two-mile march through downtown Marquette, followed by a rally at the Marquette Commons. The rally will highlight positive conversation, community dance, music and Marquette's finest food trucks. Goals are to bring together community members to share information and resources about living lighter on the planet and to create a family friendly event that raises awareness.
The People's Climate Movement, started in 2014, calls for action from government leaders and officials on climate change and environmental issues. Stemming from the People's Climate Movement, the Northern Climate Network and students at Northern Michigan University hosted Marquette's first climate march in 2014.
To participate in the march or host an educational or informational booth at the Commons, e-mail Jessica Thompson at email@example.com for more information.
